    Item Description:
I am pleased to offer this
    original
    and
    old
hand-made Japanese army officers Samurai sword, or
    Nihonto
, brought back from WWII. The blade represents the opportunity to own a historic
    Shinto katana
    made by the famous swordsmith
    Mizuta Kunishige
    , certified with
    NBTHK Hozon
papers, and with high end Shin Gunto mounts that include a
    family mon
on the handle. This is a special sword that has it all for a collector of WW2 militaria or Japanese swords.
The blade and the mountings are in
    MINTY
condition. The sword has a blade length of 26.25 inches (67cm). It features a well-grained, highly visible, and finely crafted
    itame
hada that mixes with a burl
    ko-mokume
hada. The hamon is a Bitchu-style
    chu-suguha
that is present the length of the blade through the kissaki where it ends in a
    maru
boshi. The hamon is similar to the old
    Kamakura-era Aoe
    school with a tight
    nioi guchi
    and
    ko-gunome
    ,
    ko-ashi
    , and
    yo
in and along the hamon. It is a highly refined hamon.
    The tang is signed
Bitchu no Kuni Mizuta ju Kunishige
    and has been shortened.
    Mizuta Kunishige
was a line of very well-known swordsmiths working in Bitchu province during the 1600s and 1700s. Their swords were high quality and known for expert workmanship. They have been highly sought out over time by both old samurai and collectors today. Based on the workmanship and style of signature, this sword looks to be the second or third generation working around 1600, each of which were famous. They were respectively highly ranked
    Jo Saku
    and
    Jo Jo Saku
by Fujishiro. The blade also comes with
    NBTHK Hozon
papers attetsting to the authenticity and quality of the blade.
The mountings are Type 98 Shin Gunto and in
    MINTY
condition. The tsuka is silk-cord wrapped with cherry blossom menuki. There is little to no fraying. The tsuka features a
    family mon
    of
    igeta
, or well frame, which was famous for use by clans such as the
    Mizoguchi
. The tsuba is classic WW2 with six accompanying metal seppas. The saya (scabbard) features a textured brown lacquered finish. It shows one tiny dent and very few areas of missing finish, retaining roughly
    98-99%
    of its finish.
The blade also comes with a custom made shirasaya mounting to protect the blade and a wooden tsunagi insert for the Shin Gunto mounts. The blade is in
    MINTY
condition. There are no nicks, little to no rust, and few if any scratches. There is one very small lateral ware in the
    kissaki
. There are no major flaws like hagire.
Given the high degree of craftsmanship displayed, NBTHK papers, reputation of the swordsmith, and outstanding condition of the blade and mounts, I
    highly recommend
this sword to a collector of Japanese swords or WWII militaria.
