Item Description:
I am pleased to offer this
original
and
old
hand-made Japanese sword, or
Nihonto
, brought back from WWII. The sword is a
Koto
katana from the famous
Sue-Bizen
school of swordsmiths and is
samurai-mounted
in
rare Satsuma rebellion
mounts. The blade and the mountings are in
Very Good
condition. The sword has a blade length of 26.25 inches (67 cm). The blade features a well-made
itame
hada. The hamon is a Bizen-style
choji midare
that is present the length of the blade ending in a
midare
boshi. There are activities like
ashi
and
yo
in and along the hamon.
The tang is
mumei
, or unsigned, and
o-suriage
, or shortened. Based on the length and shape, the sword looks to date to ca. 1500s and is likely from the
Sue-Bizen
school. The Sue-Bizen school was famous for supplying many swords during the Sengoku period of warring states.
The blade comes in original Samurai mountings. They are in
Very Good
condition.
The tsuka has a silk ito wrapping that is a rare
Satsuma Rebellion
style. The tsuba is iron
sukashi
with two seppaa. The saya (scabbard) is black lacquered wood. It shows a few areas of scratches and is split along its seams, held together with rubber bands. It retains roughly
~75-80%
original finish.
The blade is in
Very Good
condition. It shows 1-2 small micro nicks, some small spots of scattered rust, and some scratches along its length. There do not appear to be any major flaws like hagire.
Given the age of the blade and rarity of the mounts, I think this sword would be a great addition for a collector of WW2 militaria or Japanese swords.
