Description
Fossil AmmoniteScaphite sp.
Cretaceous
South Dakota
Scaphites is a genus of heteromorph ammonites belonging to the Scaphitidae family.
They were a widespread genus that thrived during the Late Cretaceous.
This specimen has attractive red iridescence showing on its brownish shell.
However, my camera only picked up a little of this red iridescence.
Scaphites are not plentiful, in fact they are quite rare compared to Madagascar ammonites.
There are only a handful of specimens available on ebay at any given time.
As I understand it, most scaphites we see are found in either the Pierre Shale or Fox Hills shale in South Dakota.
This is a good opportunity to get an uncommon Scaphite in good condition at an affordable price.
See my pics.
This ammonite fossil measures approximately 2-1/8" across.
Approximate weight - about 86.5 grams.
