    Description

Very cool pair of vintage space event postal covers related to John Glenn.
Example on top is particularly cool since it was canceled twice:
Feb 20, 1962: Historic launch into space as the first American to orbit the Earth
Oct. 29, 1998: His return to space on the the Space Shuttle Discovery's mission STS-95
The stamp block in the upper right corner was postmarked in 1962, but did not originally have a cachet / image on the left. The image shown here was printed in 1998 and then run through the postal meter again on the launch date of STS-95. What a unique way to commemorate both of John Glenn's flights!
The lower cover is a more standard first day cover issue with a single stamp, and NASA-produced sticker added as a cachet at a later time.
For the 1962 Mercury launch, unlike many other space events, the postal service created stamps for this event in advance of it happening, so people were able to get postmarks / cancels of the event date on the commemorative stamp.
Envelopes show yellowing where the glue browned the paper with age (visible on the back as well), the covers were stored for nearly 40 years in a stack of other covers from this launch so there is some tanning on the back from the paper where the stamps from the envelope behind it touched it. Cover has a light wave from how it was stored, but it should flatten under the weight of some books for a short time or if matted and framed, which would make a great display.
We have several examples of these covers, all with the same placement of the stamps and condition, but the block numbers of the stamps may be different.

    IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR BUYERS
    SHIPPING POLICIES and PRACTICES:
Shipping charges are based on actual postage and supply costs, with no bogus "handling" fees.
Media mail can be slow, so please take this into account when selecting your shipping options.
ALL ITEMS ARE PACKED TO PREVENT DAMAGE IN SHIPPING.
With a few exceptions (e.g., patches or other items that can be protected with bubble mailers) we ship most items in boxes or rigid packages.
Paper items are always packed with cardboard and/or foam core to prevent bends and creases.
We have 30 years experience packing items carefully for shipping.
    NON-US BUYERS:
Import duties, taxes, and charges are NOT INCLUDED in the item price or shipping charges. These are the responsibility of the buyer.
Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding or buying.
    TRACKING FOR NON-US SHIPMENTS:
We ship many items by First Class International to save buyers money, but please note that tracking for this service is sometimes more limited than expedited services. We upload the US Postal Service Customs Label number for each item, but this sometimes only confirms when the item has been shipped and can also usually be used to locate the package in customs within the destination country.
If you want a fully trackable shipping service, please request Priority Mail, Registered Mail, or Express Mail delivery. Consult with us first to determine which service will best meet your needs. We generally use Priority Mail or Registered Mail for non-US orders over .
    NON-US TRANSIT TIMES:
International shipping times may vary widely based on the destination country customs process, the time of year, and sometimes factors within destination country postal systems that are not clear to us!
It is not uncommon to ship two items to the same country on the same day, and one will arrive in 7 days, and the other may take 6 weeks. Even to the same buyer!
This is particularly true for First Class International service. The most typical range is 2 weeks.
