Mercury-Redstone 4 was the second manned US spaceflight, launched on July 21, 1961, with a Mercury-Redstone Rocket. The spacecraft was piloted by astronaut Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom. The ballistic spaceflight lasted 15 minutes 30 seconds, reached an altitude of more than 100 nautical miles, and splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean. Shortly after splashdown, the hatch cover blew accidentally. Gus Grissom could leave the capsule and be recovered safely by a Navy helicopter. The spacecraft
sunk to the seabed in the Atlantic Ocean. It
was recovered in 1999.

This presentation bears a fragment of insulation tape recovered from the sunken capsule on July 20th, 1999, and removed during the restoration process at the Kansas Cosmosphere Space Center.
