Japanese vintage Mid 1900c Temple Tsurigane Bell. Kyoto District Japan. Superb. This is a Tsurigane which is a Japanese Temple Bell brought back to the US by myself from the city of Kyoto, Japan. The Tsurigane was used in Buddhist temples to summon the monks for prayer or used to indicate the time of day. Tsurigane are tang from outside since the tone is quite loud and a good bell continues to sing for a few minutes. This bell has an excellent medium tone that lingers way after being struck by included wooden mallet.
This is a cast bronze bell from the Kyoto district of Japan. It’s casting is speculated to be during the Dhowa period of Japan. It is in excellent condition having no dents, chips or cracks. The bronze walls of the bell are 1/4” wide thus giving the bells tone. Height is approx 6 1/4” and the diameter is slightly over 4”. The wooden striker is 6 1/2” long and the
Hammer end is 2 1/2” long and 3/4” wide. The weight of the bell is 2
Lbs and 4 oz. Quite heavy and something you do not want to drop. The bell is tied with natural hemp heavy hemp cord and the Original cord first tied to the bell. All are original. I obtained and returned to California after visiting my relatives in 1998. This is a blessed and sacred piece and will hopefully also bring you many years of delight.
I am currently down sizing and following the ways of my ancestors which is, when you have enjoyed something but have lost some of the appreciation of the piece, it is better to let it go and allow another to carry on with the appreciation of its splendor until again, it will continue to be admired for it wonder.
