Description

Welcome!
WHAT IS GREAT ABOUT IT: This is a gorgeous pin which was converted from a bracelet long before it came to me, so now it's a great pin. It is made with perfectly executed, each exactly alike, petit point natural turquoise stones that have greened luminously with age. The back still has the three wires which had been the base of the bracelet and four tiny holes were drilled so wires could be inserted to attach the safety pin used successfully as a closure. The design on this pin, with tiny applied raindrops near the top of each stone and thin twisted wires separating each of the rows of stones, is an exact design I have seen in signed bracelets by Alice Quam. This would be a really old and early one and it's perfect. Although it isn't signed I am confident in the attribution to Alice Quam.
CONDITION: it's in excellent vintage, wearable and collectible condition. The four tiny holes for the wires to attach the safety pin are not at all visible.
MEASUREMENTS:
• 1-7/8" x 1-3/4" slightly convex
• weight 20.40grams
• unsigned which is usual in the very old pieces but confidently attributed to Alice Quam, Zuni
• not marked for metal content but it's sterling silver at .925, or very slightly less and no less than coin at .900
SUMMARY: This is a gorgeous pin which had been converted from a bracelet long ago and uses a safety pin closure at the back. This works and had the advantage of not having required solder. One could use laser, cold solder to attach a regular pin closure. The beautiful stones have greened in a variegated manner which is especially beautiful, with some dark green stones and some medium green and some more blue. It's a delight to wear and a precious example of the work of the great Zuni artist, Alice Quam. This is an attribution since it's not signed but I have confidence in the attribution. She was one of the great Zuni artists in history whose perfectly cut and buffed stones are part of her master artist legend. If you've always wanted some of her work this is your chance at a bargain price. I bought it well and so I'm pricing it below usual.

Attributions on many of the old pieces of Native American jewelry are sometimes a moving target. All the books have errors, so in addition to counterchecking, I have developed some expertise over the years and I do care about getting it right, so as more information comes to light I update my listings and also get in touch with my previous buyers, to inform them of any changes in attributions. I am sincerely committed to ongoing accuracy.
