Description

Being offered is a vintage pendant and necklace chain.  The pendant is crafted from the largest piece of Royston turquoise I have ever come across.  It is set in a simple design bezel which is silver in color.  I am not sure if the bezel or bale are sterling silver or plated but the quality looks good.  I did not test this as the surface area for acid testing is small and could damage the stone.  The stone has been polished and stabilized.  The turquoise is in good condition with no signs of damage noted.  The pendant has a classic southwest Indian design and style, would be great as a bracelet, but can not attribute this to being Native made with any confidence.  I would assume only Native artisans would work with such a large size, Royston turquoise stone, but when it was more plentiful, other studio artisans could have used this stone.
The turquoise stone is approx. 2 3/4" by 3 9/16" not including the bezel.  The pendant weighs about 65 grams including the bezel and bale.  I would estimate the bezel and bail weigh around 7 grams so the turquoise stone would be around 58 grams, which converts to about 290 carats.  The current price for Royston turquoise is .00 per carat, making this stone valued at around 0.00.  The sterling silver chain is approx. 20" long.  SH includes the cost of insurance.
I found some information on Royston turquoise on the website of Shop LC which stated, "This gem stands apart from many other varieties of turquoise due to its range of color. Royston turquoise can occur anywhere from a light powder blue through a vibrant emerald green. Rare specimens of this stone will show a transition of color across the material, blending blues and greens. These blended stones are precious and are often the most valuable. Royston turquoise also possesses a unique style of matrix, ranging in color from golden to brown. This results in a mix of styles. Some turquoise will show as strips, known as ribbons. Other material will be brecciated, or mixed up. This can manifest as a spiderweb pattern. Heavily mixed patterns are instead called boulders. A water web pattern appears as splashes of turquoise stone against the matrix.  As an opaque stone, Royston turquoise is formed into cabochons. These are solid pieces shaped and polished into domes. The most common shapes are circles and ovals, but tear-drop shaped pears are also popular.  It is common for Royston turquoise to receive a backing of black epoxy resin. Due to the nature of the stone, it helps increase the strength of the material for lapidary work. It also helps add thickness and weight to the material.  An epoxy coating will last with standard jewelry care, and no special care is required.  Avoid high heat or exposure to chemicals as this might damage this backing."
