Description
Welcome.WHAT IS GREAT ABOUT IT: Leonard and Lula Weebothee are among the great masters of Zuni artistry.
Their design for this bracelet is the same as their hair ornament, one of which I have available separately in my store. This design of theirs is famous in that the design appears on their artists' page in the discontinued book Zuni The Art and the People. So this is a book piece in that respect and I've included the page above. It seems they or one of their customers collaborated with another very famous artist from the Hopi Pueblo, Lewis Lomay, to create this extraordinary and unique bracelet. It is a graceful work of art which has the look of a tiara.
The gorgeous quality Kingman turquoise is cut in two different ways; the rich petit point stones, flat on top, and carved high stones combined, all being exceptional stone work and typical of this couple. In this cuff they also included two hand cut coral stones. I had considered converting the comb of theirs which I have offered separately in my store to a pin but never thought of converting it to be a brilliant bracelet. Indeed, I'm not sure it was converted. It's possible that Leonard and Lulu Weebothee made this form like that of their hair ornament, so that it would be made into a bracelet initially. There is no indication in the work that it was actually a conversion. I
t's an important collectible piece. I'd wear it with the comb if I could wear combs or might buy the comb to convert it to a pin to be worn with the bracelet. This bracelet is the most extraordinary find, very rare and beautiful. It was purchased in the 1940's-early 50's time period from the collectors.
CONDITION: excellent vintage wearable and collectible.
MEASUREMENTS:
• internal length 5-3/4" silver alone, 1" gap, total 6-3/4". Note that very wide bracelets like this can require a bigger wrist size because they extend higher, to a wider area of the arm.
• width at center 3-1/2", tapering to 5/8" at the terminals for comfort
• the bracelet is signed by the great Hopi artist, Lewis Lomay, who either did the work in collaboration with Leonard and Lulu Weebothee, the great Zuni artists, or he converted one of their pieces for the bracelet
• weight 78.95grams
• not marked for metal content which is usual for those times, but it's sterling silver .925
SUMMARY: a gorgeous, so graceful Kingman turquoise and sterling silver signed hand stamped sterling silver bracelet with fabulous stamp work and applied leaf work with hand stamping. The stone work is fabulous combining two very different cuts, both classically gorgeous for the Lulu and Leonard Weebothee work. The creation into bracelet was done by the famous Hopi artist, Lewis Lomay. It's possible it was a special order from a customer, possibly a tribal member, but the collector who bought it in the 40's to early 50's found it just like this. Truly a superb collectible which you can wear. Wearable art at is best.
