Extremely rare, unmarked, early 1960s American Space Program and Pioneers 9¼" dia. commemorative souvenir space program plate from Cape Canaveral is a Who's Who of Nasa's original seven Mercury space program astronauts including: Donald Slayton, Maj. USAF; Leroy Gordon Cooper, Jr., Capt. USAF; Walter Shirra, Jr., Lt. Comm., USN; Virgil Grissom, Capt., USAF; Alan Shephard, Jr., Lt. Comm., USN; John Glenn, Jr., Lt. Col., USMC; and Malcolm Carpenter, Lieut., USN. In near-mint condition w/glaze crazing, this awesome vintage plate shows the various rocket and separation stages from lift off to splash down around the outer perimeter, with detailed representations of the space capsule, an astronaut suited up, an astronaut inside the capsule, and the ocean retrieval of the space capsule in the water on inflated rafts with a Navy ship & crew in the distance. The plate is both decaled and silkscreened. These early 1960s American heros literally were confined within sardine can quarters while piloting these early spacecraft.
